Why Neck Pain Is So Common

The neck is a remarkably mobile structure carrying the full weight of the head, which typically weighs between 4 and 5 kilograms. Every degree that the head tilts forward adds load. For anyone spending significant time at a desk, looking at a phone, or driving, the cumulative strain on the cervical spine and surrounding muscles is considerable.

Neck pain can also arise from quite different causes. Postural strain and desk-related tension have very different characteristics from whiplash following a car accident, and both differ again from neck pain caused by stress and habitual muscle guarding. Getting an accurate picture of your specific presentation is the starting point for effective treatment.

Types of Neck Pain Treated

  • Postural neck pain
  • Desk and screen-related stiffness
  • Whiplash and injury-related pain
  • Wry neck and acute stiffness
  • Cervicogenic headaches
  • Tension headaches
  • Shoulder and arm referral from the neck
  • Upper trapezius and shoulder tension
  • Neck pain related to feeding a baby
  • Stress-related muscle tension
  • Limited range of motion
  • Nerve-related symptoms in the arm

Neck Pain and Headaches

The connection between neck dysfunction and headaches is well established. Cervicogenic headaches originate from the cervical spine and can produce pain that refers into the head, often felt behind the eye or at the base of the skull. These are different from tension-type headaches, although the two can occur together.

Many people who seek treatment primarily for headaches find that the root cause is related to restricted movement in the upper cervical spine or tension in the muscles of the neck and shoulders. Addressing these areas as part of treatment can meaningfully reduce headache frequency for some people.

Osteopathy does not treat all headache types, and Amina will be clear about what is and is not within scope for osteopathic management. Where other causes are suspected, she will refer you appropriately.

Lifestyle Factors That Affect Neck Pain

Desk setup, screen height, sleep position, and stress levels all influence neck symptoms. A 60-minute appointment allows enough time to discuss these factors properly. Amina will not just treat the area of pain but will often suggest practical changes to your working or sleeping environment that can help maintain the benefits of treatment over time.

For neck pain that has become chronic, or where posture is a significant contributing factor, online movement coaching can run alongside treatment to support longer-term improvement.

Questions

Before you book.

Is neck manipulation used in treatment?

Osteopathic treatment for neck pain can include a range of techniques. High-velocity thrust techniques (the type that may produce a clicking sound) are one option but are not used routinely and are never applied without discussion and consent. Many people respond well to soft tissue work, gentle mobilisation, and exercise without any manipulation at all. Amina will always discuss the most appropriate approach for your situation.

Can osteopathy help if I have had neck pain for years?

Chronic neck pain can often be helped by osteopathy, though the approach and realistic expectations differ from acute presentations. A longer history of pain typically responds better to a course of treatment combined with exercise and lifestyle change rather than a single session.

My headaches seem to come from my neck. Can osteopathy help?

Cervicogenic and tension-type headaches are commonly seen in osteopathic practice and osteopathy may help reduce their frequency and intensity. Amina will assess whether your headaches are likely to be musculoskeletal in origin and discuss the treatment options with you.

What should I tell Amina before my appointment?

It helps to have a rough timeline of when the pain started, what makes it better or worse, whether it is affecting your sleep, and any previous treatment you have had for this or related symptoms. You do not need to prepare a formal history; Amina will ask the relevant questions at your appointment.
